The Illustrious GMC History

GMC has had quite an illustrious history ever since it was founded in the early 1900s. Known for its engineering and innovation excellence, GMC is proud of its roots and its General Motors ownership. The firm grew from its original start building the first one-ton trucks as part of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in Pontiac, MI. In 1909 the company was acquired by William Durant, who had founded the General Motors Holding Company. Two years later, it was rebranded as the General Motors Truck Company or GMC. In 1912, GMC’s famous logo was launched on trucks. Consumers began to recognize the company for a daring and attention-getting event in 1916. During these early years of automobiles, a GMC truck carried a ton of Carnation canned milk across the country and back in 21 weeks totaling more than 9,500 miles.

By the 1940s, GMC was manufacturing highway coach buses and medium and light-duty trucks. It became an important source of military vehicles for the U.S. Armed Forces during WWII, producing over 600,000. As GMC grew to become a national treasure among automobile manufacturers, it maintained its core offerings to trucks and SUVs but moved from commercial customers to private use.

GMC recorded record sales during the twenty years between the 1960s to the 1980s. The manufacturer was producing motorhomes, minivans, buses, and SUVs. In more recent years, GMC’s most popular and highest sales volume vehicle is the Sierra pickup. Considered to be both powerful and safe, the Sierra is praised by consumers as the most powerful light-duty pickup on the market.

Today, GMC is catering to the trend toward fuel efficiency and smaller vehicles. It is producing more of these truck models and crossovers. What hasn’t changed is GMC’s sterling reputation and popularity. It’s even formed a division known as GMC Business Elite that provides firms with professional-grade solutions for their unique needs.A red, a grey, and a white 2022 GMC Acadia from a Murfreesboro GMC dealer are parked in front of a modern building.

GMC Models

The GMC brand is well-known for some classic American nameplates, such as the Sierra, Yukon, and Acadia. Its name and reputation are also revered by buyers who want a strong American-made vehicle. In marketing ads, the message to buyers is to stand apart and purchase a premium-level brand from the only premium truck manufacturer. It often tops the list of most ideal popular brands and receives higher trade-in values.

Since the brand tends to target buyers of luxury vehicles, owners clamor to the brand for its higher-end top-tier 6.2-liter engines and exclusive features, such as MultiPro Tailgate and Adaptive Ride Control. Due to its focus on utility vehicles like SUVs and pickups, GMC trucks are of higher quality and better equipped. In its vehicles, you’ll find exclusive, luxurious touches not found elsewhere. Many GMC owners find that it is the best brand for them based on their personal needs and preferences. In each category, GMC has a leading model.

Of course, the brand is led by its top-selling model, the GMC Sierra, in the Light Duty Pickup category.
