Slogans like “The Heartbeat of America” and “America’s Best Trucks” show how ingrained Chevrolet is in American culture, while trucks like the 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD serve as tangible proof. The 3500 HD is the Silverado’s heavy-duty workhorse and made its official debut as such in 1999. Today, the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD continues its legacy as a capable road warrior that can meet the demands of whatever the road puts in its way while making your time in the driver’s seat more enjoyable by offering the latest in connectivity, safety, and driver-assist technology.

Chevy redesigned the Silverado HD in 2021, ushering in a host of updates to make the truck more capable, more powerful, and more innovative than ever before. These updates boosted the truck’s maximum towing capacity to 36,000 pounds and added a variety of innovative trailering technology to make towing those loads easier. Other updates included the extension of the Silverado HD’s standard conveniences and technology, expanding from SiriusXM satellite radio to wireless smartphone integration.

Today, the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD builds on those improvements and offers a few more updates and improvements for the year. These include the availability of Chevy’s exclusive Multi-Flex Tailgate on every trim, which extends the functionality of the truck and makes it easier to access the bed. Other improvements include the addition of Greenstone Metallic to the exterior color palette as well as a power seat for the Custom trim that adds another convenience to the road warrior.

  • Capability

The Capability You Get With Gas

The 2022 Silverado 3500 HD comes with two available powertrains that allow you to design the truck exactly to your needs. The heavy-duty workhorse comes standard with a 6.6-liter V8 engine that’s paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This combination delivers 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, which is enough pulling power to tow up to 16,800 pounds on a conventional trailer or a max of 17,200 pounds with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer. Typically outfitted with dual-rear-wheels, the Silverado 3500 HD with its gas powertrain offers a maximum payload of 7,442 pounds on 2WD models or 7,145 pounds on 4WD models.

The Capability You Get With Diesel

Trucks like the Silverado 3500 HD are designed to tow heavy loads and work incredibly hard, which is why they’re often configured with dual-rear-wheels for maximum capability and pulling power. It’s also why most 3500 HD owners opt for Chevy’s 6.6-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine under the hood. Mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, the Duramax is one of the most powerful diesel engines in the segment, delivering 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. But why is torque so important? With 910 lb-ft of torque, the Duramax can handle far heavier loads, and thanks to the legendary Allison transmission, will stay within the right rpm range to maintain its speed and forward progression.

As you can expect, this steady torque delivers the 3500 HD’s best trailering capacity with a 20,000-pound maximum on a conventional trailer and a 36,000-pound maximum using a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer. One caveat to the capability of the Duramax is its heavier weight. Because of this, it slightly decreases the truck’s maximum payload when compared to the 6.6-liter V8. When outfitted with the Duramax, the 3500 HD offers a maximum payload of 6,532 pounds on 2WD models and 6,196 pounds on 4WD models.

    The Silverado's Usable Bed Design

How often do you use the bed of your truck? Are you happy with how the tailgate operates? Do traditional truck beds have enough lighting? How well has the truck bed held up to wear and tear over time? These are just a few questions Chevy considered when designing the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD. The end goal is to create a workhorse with a functional design that would make everything easier.

The Silverado 3500 HD’s functional design starts at the rear of the truck with the integrated bed steps and the Durabed. Offering the most cargo room in the heavy-duty segment, the Durabed is also the most functional and is designed to make loading, unloading, and hauling cargo easier and more efficient. To do this, the Durabed is equipped with 12 standard tie-downs that offer plenty of options for safely securing even the bulkiest load. Adding LED lighting to the bed and a 120-volt outlet extends the bed’s versatility, giving you better visibility and a place to run power tools and other electronics.

    The Multi-Flex Tailgate

The Durabed’s rugged and functional design pairs exceptionally well with Chevy’s exclusive Multi-Flex Tailgate that’s now available on every trim in the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD lineup. The unique multifunctional tailgate, which was one of General Motors’ best-kept secrets for over a decade, leads the industry by offering six unique functions that make hauling cargo easier and less physically demanding. How does it work?

The primary gate functions as a traditional tailgate but can be opened from a button on the gate, a switch inside the truck, or a button on the key fob. The primary gate load stop unfolds to keep longer items from sliding out of the bed (like sheets of plywood or lengthy pipes) while the inner gate folds down, offering easier access into the bed. You can fold the inner gate out into a full-width step that can support up to 375 pounds. The inner gate also features a load stop and a work surface, the latter of which also gives you easier access into the upper area of the bed to load and unload items.

Technology to Make Your Life Easier

With the 2022 Silverado 3500 HD capable of towing up to 36,000 pounds, Chevy gives you the tools you need to tow any size load with confidence. The Silverado’s extensive 8-camera system offers the most views in the segment and engineers confidence at every turn. These 15 unique camera views give you a clear picture of the truck and trailer in real-time from every angle and include four hitch views (Hitch View, Surround View, Rear Top-Down View, and Bed View), six driving views (Transparent Trailer, Front Camera View, Pic-in-Pic Side View, Rear Camera Mirror, Rear Trailer View, and Inside Trailer View), and five parking views (Rear Camera VIew, Rear Side View, Bowl View, Front Side View, and Front Top-Down View).

Along with these expansive views, the Silverado 3500 HD is also equipped with the segment’s first Advanced Trailering System. The tool allows you to create customized trailer profiles for up to five trailers. In each profile, you can go through the trailer’s pre-departure checklist, monitor the air pressure and temperature of the trailer’s tires, and check the lights. With the tool accessible via the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system or the myChevrolet mobile app, you have access to this information wherever you are.

With the Advanced Trailering System putting vital information at your fingertips and the 15-view camera system giving you a view of every angle, you can rely on the Silverado HD’s dynamic trailering tools to help you stay in control behind the wheel. The Jack-Knife Alert tool monitors the position of the trailer in correlation to the truck’s rear bumper and alerts you to potential jack-knife situations. The Trailer Length Indicator shows you the length of your truck and trailer, making it easier to safely change lanes. The Trailer Angle Indicator with Guidelines makes navigating a trailer in reverse easier, while the Bed View with Cargo Bed Zoom and Bed Hitch Guidance makes hitching and unhitching easier than you’ve ever imagined.
