  • Overview

The SUV has certainly come a long way, hasn't it? Think about it—from the giant mountains of metal to the slimmed-down sporty vehicles that can be found on the city streets. If one were to compare a popular model from two decades ago and the standard fare today, the differences would certainly be staggering. It seems like only yesterday when the minivan was considered to be the ideal vehicle for the family-oriented consumer; now, the SUV has usurped the role, providing an alternative that's stylish, roomy, and sometimes possessing the same size that's comparable to a four-door sedan.

While compact and subcompact SUVs are certainly ideal for city dwellers, what about the person who needs a large SUV? Something that's of considerable size but still offers the same incentives that the smaller versions possess? If there's a brand you can trust to deliver the goods on both fronts, you know it's gotta be Chevy. The 2022 Chevy Traverse is somewhat of a throwback to the larger SUVs of years prior but updated for optimal performance and economy. We're going to take an extra special look at this throwback that lacks for nothing. If you’re in the market for a three-row family vehicle that can take on traditional SUV tasks with no problem, then the Traverse might just be the model for you.

    Standard V6 Engine

For those of you who remember the tumultuous decade of the 1990s, you may recall that SUVs were not only quite large, but so were their motors. After all, you need a sizable powertrain to haul all that metal around. Right? Well, the Traverse is proof that you can indeed reinvent the wheel. While finding an SUV with a V8 isn't impossible in this day and age, many consumers have come to expect economical 4-cylinders in their compact choices. What the Chevy Traverse offers is a compromise between these two worlds in the form of a 3.6L V6.

Paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, this V6 generates 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. As these specifications clearly indicate, it manages to produce the necessary power that the Traverse requires and, as we'll soon see, provide economical fuel consumption. If you're what's known as a "trailering type," rejoice. Thanks to this powerful V6, the Traverse possesses a more than respectable towing capacity of 5,000 lbs.

    Front-Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive?

Like many SUVs, the Traverse comes with the option of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Both drivetrains provide varying levels of fuel consumption, and choosing which one works best for you comes down to a matter of what you plan on using your Traverse for and if you what type of drivetrain works best for the location you call home. Those who reside here in Shelbyville might prefer the front-wheel drive model, which achieves 18 MPG in the city, and 27 MPG on the highway.

If the terrain you live in is slightly more rugged or if you enjoy taking your family out hiking or camping, you might be better off with all-wheel drive. While some have pointed out how all-wheel drive hinders mileage, the all-wheel drive Traverse is still effective and conservative with its fuel consumption. You'll average 17 MPG when you're in the city. This number expands to a total of 25 MPG while on the highway. Given the small difference in fuel economy ratings, most Tennessee drivers may decide to opt for all-wheel drive in their Traverse.

  • Interior

    Spacious, Comfortable, Accommodating

As one might expect, the interior of the Traverse is spacious, comfortable, and accommodating for you, your passengers, and whatever you decide to take along with you. While the Chevy Blazer styled its interior in the same vein as the Camaro, the Traverse is a vehicle that's much more down to earth in its design. For the bigger-than-average family or the person who just needs to maximize their storage options, the Traverse appears to be the perfect vehicle for both situations.

A standard 7" infotainment screen anchors the center console, which is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the numerous tech features that will impress both the discerning consumer and the techie who likes to keep up with recent changes and innovations within the industry. The 2022 Traverse comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a six-speaker stereo system, six USB ports, and even a Wi-Fi hotspot. While the Traverse may appear to be a throwback to some of the older SUVs from decades prior, it embraces technology to bring the concept of the past into the present and perfect it.

    Spacious Design

Comfort is assured with the Traverse, thanks to its standard triple-zone climate control, which is more than ideal for three-row seating and passengers who want the temperature exactly where they want it. Speaking of third-row seating, the available storage space in the Traverse is easily one of the best advantages for those who need a vehicle that can transport just about anything life throws at you.

With its affordable starting MSRP, the Traverse underbids rival offerings from Toyota, Honda, and Jeep. More than price, the Traverse boasts a storage area of over 98 cubic feet. This beats out other class rivals such as the Ford Explorer and Kia Telluride. You've got space, you've got tech, and you've got performance. Who could ask for anything more?

  • Safety

    Safety Is Standard

While technology and innovation have always been the cornerstones of the industry, there's one aspect that always was and always will be a top priority for every driver, consumer, and critic—safety. When evaluating the safety attributes of any vehicle, it's important to not just view what features are available from the manufacturer but what comes standard and is made available to everyone regardless of what trim level they purchase.

There's another part of this assessment, and this includes seeking out the results from official crash testing. In testing conducted by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), the Chevy Traverse received admirable rankings as a vehicle that upholds the high standards that Chevy has always prided itself on. The crash test results showed that airbag deployment was highly effective in protecting the driver and passengers in the event of a collision.

Because Chevy has always kept an eye on what benefits the average consumer, a considerable amount of safety features and driver assistance technologies come standard across all trim lines (of which there are six altogether). The Chevy Traverse comes standard with forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking with front pedestrian braking, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, and GM's Teen Driver program. This final system is a way to reinforce effective driving habits in younger drivers and even allows for control over such features as the level of volume that the stereo can reach.

    Optional Safety Upgrades

The wide variety of standard features can be thoroughly accentuated by additional features that are available on some of the higher trim levels. These include such state of the art implements such as lane change alert with side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert, rear park assist, and adaptive cruise control. The 2022 Chevy Traverse even offers high-end safety features that you might not expect to find in such an affordable vehicle. These include Chevy's one-of-a-kind safety alert seat, which vibrates to alert you to potential danger, and a rear camera washer so that you always have a clear view behind your SUV.

Whether you decide to stick with the safety features that come standard with the Chevy Traverse or spring for some of the available options, your safety is guaranteed. And in a world that's becoming increasingly unpredictable on an almost daily basis, that's some assurance that you can't put a price tag on.
